Monocrystalline panels dominate the residential market because they offer the best balance of efficiency, durability, and cost per watt. Polycrystalline panels have declined in market share as monocrystalline prices have fallen. Thin-film panels are niche products used mainly on flat commercial roofs or building-integrated applications.

Inverter Types

The inverter converts DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity for your home. There are three main types:

String inverters (EUR 600-1,200) connect all panels in a series string. Simple, reliable, and affordable, but the entire string's output is limited by the weakest panel. Best for unshaded roofs with panels in a single orientation.

Microinverters (EUR 100-200 per panel) attach to each panel individually. Each panel operates independently, so shading on one panel does not affect the others. Best for partially shaded roofs or multiple roof orientations. Higher total cost but better per-panel monitoring.

Hybrid inverters (EUR 1,000-2,500) combine a string inverter with a battery charger. If you plan to add battery storage now or in the future, a hybrid inverter avoids the cost of a separate battery inverter later.

Maintenance Schedule

Solar panels are low maintenance, but a simple annual routine extends their productive life:

  • Annually: Clean panels with water and a soft brush (no detergents) if soiled
  • Every 2-3 years: Professional inverter check and performance review
  • Year 10-15: Budget for inverter replacement (EUR 600-1,200)

Frequently Asked Questions

Monocrystalline panels are made from a single silicon crystal, giving them higher efficiency (20-22%) and a uniform black appearance. Polycrystalline panels use multiple silicon crystals, with slightly lower efficiency (15-17%) and a blue speckled look. Monocrystalline costs 10-20% more but generates more per square metre.
A battery is not essential. Without a battery, you export surplus daytime energy and import from the grid at night. A battery lets you store daytime surplus for evening use, increasing self-consumption from 30-40% to 70-80%. Whether a battery is worth it depends on the price difference between import and export rates.
