How to Calculate Paving Materials
Whether you are laying a garden patio, a driveway, or a simple path, getting the material quantities right saves money and avoids delays. This guide explains the formulas behind the calculator and provides reference tables for the most common paving scenarios.
The Paving Stones Formula
The core calculation is:
Stones needed = (Area in sqm) / (Effective stone area in sqm) x Waste factor
The effective stone area includes the joint width on two sides:
- Stone 200mm with 3mm joints: effective size = 203mm x 203mm = 0.0412 sqm per stone
- Stones per sqm = 1 / 0.0412 = 24.3 stones
- With 5% waste for a 20 sqm patio: 20 x 24.3 x 1.05 = 511 stones
Paving Stone Sizes Reference
| Stone Size (mm) | Stones per sqm (3mm joint) | Pack Size (typical) | Packs per 10 sqm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 x 200 | 47 | 488 | 1 |
| 200 x 200 | 24 | 64 | 4 |
| 300 x 300 | 11 | 22 | 5 |
| 400 x 400 | 6 | 16 | 4 |
| 450 x 450 | 5 | 12 | 5 |
| 600 x 600 | 3 | 9 | 4 |
Smaller stones create more joints, which improves drainage but increases laying time. Larger slabs cover ground faster but are heavier to handle and more prone to cracking if the sub-base is uneven.
Sub-base and Sand Requirements
| Material | Purpose | Quantity per sqm | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| MOT Type 1 gravel | Sub-base | 0.18 tonnes | 100mm (patio) |
| MOT Type 1 gravel | Sub-base | 0.27 tonnes | 150mm (driveway) |
| Sharp sand | Laying course | 0.05 tonnes | 30-40mm |
| Kiln-dried sand | Jointing | 5 kg | N/A |
The sub-base provides structural support and drainage. MOT Type 1 is the standard specification — it compacts well and does not shift under load. Always compact in layers using a plate compactor or hand tamper. A well-prepared concrete sub-base may be needed for heavy vehicle traffic.
Material Costs at a Glance
| Material | Unit | Price Range (EUR) |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete block pavers (200mm) | per sqm | EUR 20-35 |
| Natural stone slabs (450mm) | per sqm | EUR 30-80 |
| Porcelain paving slabs | per sqm | EUR 40-90 |
| MOT Type 1 gravel | per tonne | EUR 25-40 |
| Sharp sand | per tonne | EUR 20-35 |
| Kiln-dried jointing sand | per 25kg bag | EUR 5-10 |
| Aluminium edge restraint | per metre | EUR 4-8 |
Concrete block pavers offer the best value for driveways and paths. Natural stone and porcelain are premium choices for patios where appearance matters most. Compare costs in detail with our paving cost calculator.
Estimating Time and Labour
| Project Size | Area | DIY Time | Professional Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small path | Under 10 sqm | 2-3 days | 1-2 days |
| Medium patio | 10-30 sqm | 3-5 days | 2-3 days |
| Large patio or driveway | 30+ sqm | 5-8 days | 3-5 days |
Most of the time is spent on preparation — excavation, sub-base compaction, and levelling. The actual stone-laying goes quickly once the base is right. A plate compactor (EUR 30-60/day hire) speeds up sub-base preparation dramatically compared to hand tamping.
These calculations are estimates only. Actual requirements may vary depending on surface conditions, product specifications, and installation methods. Always consult a qualified professional for precise measurements.
